A Case of Primary Mucocele of the Maxillary Sinus


Abstract
This is report of a case of primary mucocele occurring in the left maxillary sinus, which is supposed to be rare.
This 32 years old male entered to the National Police Hospital on Oct. 2-1971 with complaints of a palpable mass in the left cheek.
The external examination revealed that a walnut sized, moderately hard, and sound shaped mass which has slight fluctuation, was palpated on the left7 maxillary; region, however no tenderness could be demonstrated.
Aspiration of the contents disclosed chocolate colored mucoid fluid, and negative finding were detected, in the nasal cavity by ant rhinoscopy.
X-ray study of maxillary sinus showed slight cloudiness over the left maxillary sinus, without definite evidence of the bone destruction. Under suspiction of maxillary cyst exploratory operation(caldwell-luis operation approach) was performed and found that a large mucocele of maxillary sinus which, involving the ant and medical bony wall of the sinus.
The whole mucosa was carefully separated and removed and a wide enough counter opening was made. Post operative course was satisfactory and no undesirabe sequela occurred up to date.
